  • Never grocery shop hungry OR tired! New research found that sleep-deprived grocery shoppers purchased more high-calorie foods than when they were well rested.
  • Yay for CSAs! Community-supported agriculture (CSA) program with home delivery of fresh, local produce was linked to an increase in accessibility AND intake of vegetables and fruit in low-income women and their children. For more information on CSAs near you, check out LocalHarvest.org
  • Encouraging kids to adopt a positive lifestyle changes – good nutrition and exercise – was effective at improving health in a short two week intervention in both healthy-weight and obese kids! Researchers suggest focusing on lifestyle, not numbers on the scale in kids. Good advice for adults too!
  • TGIFFood that’s not food. Great slideshow rundown of faux food culprits like spray cheese, fake whipped cream and orange drinks… just to name a few.
  • It’s not just about weight! In a large cohort of Danish women, there was no link to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke in overweight and obese women who were free of diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia; their risk was similar to that of healthy-weight women. Overweight women with metabolic disease, however, showed a seven-fold increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
