Flavour of the Week

  • Sports fans seek solace in junk food? When researchers compared the food intake of football fans of winning teams and losing teams with their usual intake on a weekday, fans of teams that lost consumed 16% more saturated fat, while winning fans consumed 9% less. The difference was even more apparent after heartbreaking games with close scores. We wonder what beer intake looked like!
  • TGIFEven after controlling for a variety of maternal and environmental factors, a Japanese study of more than 40,000 children found the breast feeding significantly reduced risk of overweight and obesity in childhood compared with those exclusively formula fed.
  • Satiety-stimulating response to glucagon is blunted in obese individuals. Although glucagon is most known for stimulating glucose storage release when blood glucose levels drop, growing research suggests it promotes reduced levels of appetite stimulating hormones. When obese and healthy body weight individuals were given an injection of glucagon, healthy weight individuals reported increased fullness compared with placebo while obese individuals did not.
  •  More reason to avoid BPA in food containers! Children with higher levels of BPA in their urine were more likely to be obese and have very high waist-to-hip ratio.
